Ralph Vaughan Williams: Symphony No 8
Reposting my video presentation of RVW's Eighth Symphony. The original upload has been spoiled by advertisements added by UA-cam. I hope this repost will remain uninterrupted for at least a few weeks. (The symphony was composed between 1953 and 1955. Sir John Barbirolli, its dedicatee, conducted the Hallé Orchestra in the premiere at the Free Trade Hall in Manchester on 2 May 1956. It is the shortest of the composer's nine symphonies.)

The world spins, and I stand on the precipice of my own existence. The weight of memories, like stones in my chest, pulls me down. Each beat of my heart echoes the pain, the loss, the love that once was. In the quiet hours, when the moon hangs low and the stars weep, I trace the jagged edges of my fractured soul. The cracks run deep, etched by time and circumstance. I am a vessel of hurt, a vessel of hope. The healing begins-a fragile dawn after a long, dark night. The stitches pull tight, binding broken pieces together. I breathe in the ache, exhale the shadows. The scars tell stories-of battles fought, of wounds tended, of resilience. And so, I step into this new day, my heart a mosaic of pain and possibility. The sun rises, casting a golden hue upon my fractured self. I am not whole, but I am alive. Welcome to the first day of your healing

where a merchant navy, a lord nelson, a west country or a battle of Britain sits at the head of a train, waiting to depart the capital's largest station for destinations such as Weymouth, Bournemouth, Southampton or Portsmouth, a desiro unit now stands, no more does the station pilot come hurrying up from Clapham junction with the empty coaches, where the commuter tank once would hurry about the suburban lines, gone, replaced by the great southern electrics of yesteryear, now too they are departing for the last time, the end of the slam door in suburbia was the end of march 1995, now of the great southern electrics of the capital, their legacy lives on in but a few, the electrostars of the mainlines and branches of the south, and the last hurrah, the networkers, a sibling class ripped away, and a sub-class gone too, but they live, the great southern electrics of London, the EPB, the BIL, that HAL and the SUB, the PEP and the 4DD, all taken away from us now, but, before they get torn away too, let us enjoy the workhorses of the southeast of London: the networkers, born of 1991, they are the finale of the worlds largest electrified network, and now they live in the capital mostly, a symbol of the country's greatness that now is reducing, the music feels like it mirrors this somewhat, the rise and fall, they heyday of the southern electric, now its story almost over, only at about 20 minutes so far, but oh how much this feels like the story of the southern railway in London

Touching - hard to stop the tears... WV's lesser-known works (5 Tudor Portraits, Pilgrim's Prog etc) are wonderful. His music reflects the traumatic age he lived in, which no doubt lessens the number of his followers, but somehow our collective power more than compensates
